Children & Families ...

The Search Institute has identified 40 Developmental Assests. These are building blocks of healthy development that help young people grow up healthy, caring and responsible. Indicators representing three external developmental assets for youth have been chosen for this report.
In addition, information is presented on the percentage of children in out-of-home placement. This indicator measures children placed in foster care, emergency foster care group homes or residential treatment facilities by county social service agencies.  

 Why are these indicators important?

  The percentage of youth that have a significant number of positive adult relationships
  outside of the family is an indicator of the developmental asset of Support. Young people
  need to experience support, care and love from their families, neighbors and many others.

  The percentage of youth who participate in available youth programs is an indicator of the
  developmental asset of Constructive Use of Time. Young people need constructive,
  enriching opportunities for growth through creative activities; youth programs.

  As stated in "Kids Count Minnesota", a report by the Children's Defense Fund Minnesota,
  "this indicator is important because children in out-of-home placement are usually there
   because of serious problems in their families.
