Social Capital ...

Social Capital refers to those stocks of social trust, norms and networks that people can draw upon to solve common problems. Based on extracts from "Social Capital: Family Support Services and Neighborhood and Community Centers in NSW" Paul Bullen and Jenny Onyx, April 1999," elements of social capital include:

Participation in the local community, pro-activity in social context, feelings of trust and safety, neighborhood connections, family and friends connections, tolerance of diversity, value of life, and work connections.

Why are social capital indicators important?

According to Robert Putnam, author of Bowling Alone: The Collapse and Revival of
  American Community,
" social capital allows citizens to resolve collective problems more
easily and it greases the wheels that allow communities to advance smoothly. Where people
are trusting and trustworthy, and where they are subject to repeated interactions with fellow
citizens, everyday business and social transactions are less costly".
